Refugee Museum of Denmark. An international world-class museum
Refugee Museum of Denmark. An international world-class museum
The FLUGT museum is dedicated to the history of refugees - past and present. At the museum you will find compelling, moving and well-told stories that give you an insight into what it has always meant to be a refugee.
You're greeted by an amazing building when you arrive at the museum. The small mullioned windows and the classic old red bricks tell a story of a bygone era. As you enter the museum, you immediately feel the modern era that binds the old buildings together into one large museum. The brick and corten steel from the modern part of the building plays perfectly with the old mullions and bricks - just as the stories told in the museum are from all times.

FLUGT: The museum is dedicated to the history of refugees – both past and present.
Every year, every day, external circumstances force people to flee their homes. This exhibition turns numbers and statistics into real stories and real people. You get to go where it's really felt and get a glimpse into the journey of a refugee - from what was home, to what might be home in the future.
With up to 35,000 people at its peak, the Oksbøl camp stands today as a reminder of the victims of WW2. World War II also brought with it after its end in 1945. You can walk through the refugee camp with an audio guide that gives you a vivid sense of what life must have been like for the many German refugees.

Oksbøl's old refugee hospital stands as a sad reminder of the past and the many people forced to flee today with an uncertain future on the horizon. After the 2. World War II in 1945, 250,000 refugees streamed across the Danish/German border fleeing their homeland. The new architecture of the museum - with an older and a modern part - beautifully ties a respectful bow around the history that is still highly relevant today. The museum takes a deep dive into a global issue that is becoming increasingly serious. New external factors such as climate change are triggering a whole new kind of refugee flows. The museum is an important voice in articulating the issues and making it easier to understand through didactic communication.
In other words, FLUGT is the perfect place for those who want to dive deeper into history - and learn about the local history of the Blåvand area.
FLUGT is 15 minutes by car and 35 minutes by bike from Vejers Strand Camping
It's always a good idea to keep an eye on the museum's website so you can plan your dream visit.
